Key Performance Indicator (kPi) Prototype Tool for the UK Royal Navy
"My project was to develop the Inventory Key Performance indicator (kPi) toolset, using programs that would automate data processing and present the data. Whilst on placement with Defence Analytical Services & Advice (DASA), I was offered a choice of several projects; the Inventory Key Performance Indicator Tools was the most appealing. The project had the potential to have a high impact on the supply chain process. In addition, it was the first stepping stone for several projects that would streamline data processing and produce additional performance statistics for Fleet Wide Equipment. The project was based on statistics relating to the UK Royal Navy supply chain, in particular the ordering and delivery of parts (nuts, bolts engines etc) to ships and naval establishments. The tools enable the customer, Fleet Wide Equipment (FWE), to monitor and evaluate the performance of inventory managers, teams of people,
Master Equipments and ships. It also helps to identify areas key areas for investigation, which are shown by performance statistics in the presentation tool. Based within Microsoft Access and Excel for easy use, there are two separate tools, one for processing data and a second to display the data output. Separating the two parts reduces the size of the program and allows processing to take place centrally within the organisation. There are several benefits to the tools: reducing processing time from 5 days to 1.5 hours, consistent statistics, central processing of data, and additional information that is available for every level from a director to an individual employee. The tools are still in the development phase with further work to continue, adding new sources of data and new ways of segmenting data."
