Cardea - A Short Film
"This short film is an abstract representation of my views on conformity.
I was inspired by seeing how people behave around one another and
how everyone typically, at some stage, will conform to be accepted. I
really wanted to make a film to convey the message that so long as you're
comfortable in your own skin, the desire to be accepted is lessened and
you are content to be yourself. I wanted the film to remain open somewhat
so that the viewer can draw their own conclusions from the piece and,
hopefully, provoke thought and interpretation.
I liked exploring the use of colour to tell a story, as there is no dialogue
in the piece at all, and for the soundtrack to compliment the images
onscreen. The soundtrack is my own composition and is designed to reflect
what is happening and the stages of self discovery the female character is
going though.
I wanted the title to reflect the message in the film, and felt that using the
character's name would be pertinent. 'Cardea' was the name I chose
because it reflects a theme within the film without directly referring to it;
the name 'Cardea' stems from the Latin, cardo, which means door. It was
the name of a Roman Goddess who was the Goddess of change, door
pivots, and thresholds. Seeing as the film revolves around this theme I felt
it was an apt title.
I used Adobe Photoshop to edit the sequences frame by frame to
re-colour the actress, and Adobe After Effects to edit colour in other places
using masks. It was a lengthy process but the most efficient way to achieve
the results I wanted.
I've always been keen on short films as it allows filmmakers to express
anything they want, in any way they can think of. It's free and allows for
creativity without having to cling to conventions of mainstream filmmaking.
And that's what this film has aimed to achieve."
