3D Audiobook
"For my Technology project, I have created a 3D Audiobook using surround
sound and synthetic binaural techniques.
The idea came from listening to audio books and watching movies
common questions being 'why can't the movie stick to the original storyline?'
and, 'that's not how I imagined the scene when I read it'. These questions led
to the idea of creating the most immersive and exciting experience of a book
- a 3D Audiobook. The sounds can stimulate the imagination to be swept
away into the story, allowing the imagination to paint its own pictures.
The book I chose to work with was "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkien. This 3D
Audiobook is both fully 3D and notably still an audio book there are some
audio books that use full cast recordings, as opposed to a single narrator,
which is like watching a movie but switching off the display and leaving the
speakers on.
Similarly to standard audio books, there is only one narrator reading the
story. However, unlike ordinary audio books, the 3D Audiobook is incredibly
immersive and testing results showed that 93% of people preferred the 3D
version over the standard narrated audio book.
The project demonstrates my sound design, recording, editing, and
surround sound mixing abilities, processing the sounds in to a synthetic
binaural mix (instead of using dummy-head recording method). All sound
design audio and recordings were mixed using Pro Tools HD. Plug-ins and
automation were used to create a sense of distance and movement in the
sound field. The synthetic binaural works by convolution of head related
transfer functions (HTRF) impulses with the surround sound mix, which in
turn is mixed again to simulate a realistic binaural experience.
From this project, I've gone on to create a binaural concept album
'The Mind's Eye' using recordings Ive taken and the techniques used in the
3D Audiobook to create an immersive and surreal listening experience."
