Flea Circus: A Short Narrative Animation
"For my final year project I wanted to focus entirely on animation in a
traditional style, as that's what inspired me to pursue a life in film and
television all the way back from my childhood. The idea went on to become
'Flea Circus'.
Originating from a single doodle of a cartoon dog, I decided to create a cast
of anthropomorphic characters and put a lot of effort into portraying real
people on screen who could tell a compelling story. Aiming my story at a
young adult audience, I took inspiration from my favourite films and television
programmes, Futurama, Six Feet Under, Daria, Curb your Enthusiasm and
American Beauty.
I had a great time working on the project, and feel the final 'pilot episode'
has a nice look to it, mixing 3D and 2D animation whilst keeping that classic
cartoon look, as well as being produced for virtually zero financial cost. I
estimate over 400 hours were spent from the initial writing stage to the final
cut, and during that time I found myself getting increasingly involved with the
overall world I was trying to create, discovering how much more there was to
both writing a great story and bringing it to the screen.
Now that 'Flea Circus' is completed, I intend to dedicate some of my free
time to developing the idea as a short series. After seeing the finished
project, a number of people have become interested in helping with the
development of the show and I hope that with the right amount of hard
work and the proper presentation, something great may one day happen
for the series! Despite what may happen in the future, I am still able to say
that I wrote, directed, animated, edited and co-starred in my own 13 minute
cartoon, and that is something I am very proud of.
I would also like to thank the six other talented friends of mine who lent their
voices to the cartoon, Hayley Hanford, Andrew Polley, Ben Hall, Alex Mantle,
Andy Cowell and Matt Hall".
