Achieving Top Marks: Supporting ICT Potential in a Secondary School
"The Framework for ICT Technical Support (FITS) was created by the
British Educational Communications and Technology Agency (BECTA) to
help schools receive high quality technical support services regardless of
size and budget. BECTA claims that FITS can be adapted to accommodate
various requirements.
My consultancy report compares the IT support methods used by Montsaye Community College to BECTAs FITS framework. The aim of the report was to put the FITS framework into practice by evaluating the technical support currently in place at a school, use the framework to suggest improvements to the Head of ICT, and evaluate if BECTA can be a useful evaluation tool judging by the results that I had found.
I researched the background of BECTA and the FITS framework to see why it is necessary to have computers in schools, and how reliable computer networks and devices can affect a students learning and future career. The FITS framework was also examined in detail to see what components it is made up from and what guidelines are suggested for the school to follow.

The report provided an insight into current support activities at Montsaye
Community College through the use of questionnaires and observations.
The questions were influenced by the requirements of the FITS framework
so that comparisons could be obtained.
The conclusion of the report was for me to make my recommendations
to the head of ICT based of my chosen school and to decide whether the
FITS framework had a positive impact on the organisation of their technical
support. I presented my project to the Head of ICT at Montsaye and their
response was that the information I had researched had been useful,
and showed particular interest in the creation of a Stock Control Database,
which they were keen to implement and use within the department.
I found consultancy work very rewarding and I enjoyed conducting the
research involved. I therefore would be interested in this aspect of ICT as
a career, particularly if this role was in the field of education, information
or knowledge management. I also enjoyed the Information Security
Management and Data Protection modules from the degree course
and these are also areas of career interest."
